A Guide to Summer in Stellenbosch

It’s never too early to secure guest house accommodation in Stellenbosch when you’re planning a summer holiday there. The town is usually heaving with tourists during the summer months and festive season. And, with an abundance of attractions and recurring events, it’s obvious why the City of Oaks becomes so popular.

This is also why it’s ideal to opt for holiday accommodation in Stellenbosch central.

Being within walking distance from most of the town-based activity will save you time and also afford you the opportunity to explore and experience a lot more. This includes:

1. The Markets

If you love all things fresh, there’s a wide variety of weekend markets to choose from in Stellenbosch, each with its own distinct identity and focus.

The Root44 Market is all about the experience. Open every Saturday and Sunday from 10:00 to 16:00, on the Route 44 between Stellenbosch and Somerset West, this market prides itself on the lively crowd it attracts. Apart from food and drinks, Root44 also offers live entertainment and a wide range of children’s activities, with World of Adventure @Root44.

For culinary enthusiasts, the Slow Food Market offers locally grown and caught organic produce every Saturday from 09:00 to 14:00. Surrounded by picturesque vineyards and trees on the Oude Libertas Estate, this market’s focus is primarily organic gourmet food and even organic wines.

If vintage and thrift shopping is your thing, the indoor Woodmill Lifestyle Market should be on your list. This market also offers live music and children’s entertainment, and is open the last Friday of every month from 17:00 until 22:00.

Every Sunday from 10:00 to 15:00, the Blaauwklippen Family Market is the perfect family outing. Located amongst the beautiful Blaauwklippen Vineyards, families can enjoy a pet and child-friendly environment to the backdrop of live music. The market is famous for its delicious cheese and wine selection, fresh fruits and falafels. So, you won’t need to bring anything other than a blanket to secure your picnic spot.

Food and wine are central to Stellenbosch’s allure, and there is definitely something for everyone in this beautiful town.

2. The Restaurants

Stellenbosch’s restaurant scene is every foodie’s dreams come true. From fine dining to great street food, there’s definitely a range of options to make each meal of the day memorable.

Visually spectacular, the Delaire Graff Restaurant captivates both the palate and the eyes. Overlooking the Delaire Graff Estate gardens, the restaurant combines classic bistro cuisine with South African creativity.

With a focus on seasonal texture and championing local organic produce, Jardine Restaurant, in Andringa Street, offers an interesting menu that also caters to vegetarians well.

If your palate favours the modern and conceptual, Makaron in Paradyskloof won’t disappoint.

As a stop in central Stellenbosch, Katjiepiering Restaurant is an oasis situated in the Stellenbosch Botanical Gardens. Here, the scenery and cuisine are equally delightful, especially for lunch in a busy travel schedule.

3. The Outdoors

With breathtaking scenery all around, hiking in the Stellenbosch area should be included on a summer holiday itinerary. There’s a wide selection of trails to choose from - each varying in intensity and rigour.

Botmanskop Mountain is a steep, but relatively short (up to 3 hours) climb to the top, with panoramic views from the summit that will make the effort worthwhile.

For the more adventurous hiker, the Bergrivier Hiking Trail, starting in the Jonkershoek Nature Reserve, will test your endurance during its average 7 hour duration. Alternatively, the 17km Panorama Trail also in the Jonkershoek Nature Reserve, is equally rewarding and offers unforgettable views of the Jonkershoek Valley.

The Boland Trail from the Nuweberg offices, has a variety of options to entice all fitness levels, making it a versatile option for everyone from families to fitness fanatics.

There’s so much to see and experience in Stellenbosch around the year, but be sure to plan your holiday activities well in advance. Book your stay with us for this summer and enjoy all the City of Oaks has to offer.
